Small daily habits that protect your health
You don't need a dramatic overhaul to feel better. A handful of small, repeatable habits do most of the work.

When patients ask me where to start with their health, they often expect a long list. In practice, a few consistent habits matter far more than any single dramatic change. The goal is not perfection โ it is repetition.
Move a little, most days
Adults benefit from about 150 minutes of moderate activity a week. That can be a 20โ30 minute walk most days. If that feels like a lot, start with ten minutes after a meal and build from there. Movement helps blood pressure, blood sugar, mood, and sleep all at once.
Protect your sleep
Most adults need seven to nine hours. Poor sleep worsens appetite control, blood pressure, concentration, and pain tolerance. A consistent bedtime and wake time โ even on weekends โ is usually more effective than any supplement.
Watch the everyday exposures
- Avoid smoking and vaping; if you smoke, quitting is the single highest-value change you can make.
- Keep alcohol occasional and moderate.
- Stay hydrated, especially in hot weather.
- Take short breaks from sitting โ stand or walk for a few minutes each hour.
Don't skip the boring things
Take prescribed medicines as directed, keep your vaccinations current, and attend routine check-ups. These unglamorous habits prevent far more illness than any trend.
A note on pacing
If you are managing a long-term condition, the advice above still applies but should be scaled to your energy and abilities. Talk with me about what is realistic for you rather than measuring yourself against general guidelines.
